The Myanma Awba Group, one of the country’s largest agricultural companies, has opened a private agrochemical factory in northern Yangon, as part of a partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The USD 35 million Hmawbi Agriculture Input Complex (HAIC), is built on 126 acres of land in Yangon Region’s Hmawbi Township, according to an article in the Myanmar Times. The report said that Awba is providing USD 25 million for the project, with the rest coming from the IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank. Although Myanmar has a huge agricultural industry, most of the agrochemicals used in the country are imported, putting a financial strain on farmers. “Given the importance of the agriculture sector in Myanmar, it is time for us to take charge and develop our capacity and capabilities in agrochemical formulation technology,” U Thadoe Hein, chair and CEO of Myanma Awba, was quoted as saying.
