The European Union has announced that it has signed an agreement with Myanmar to provide 14 million Euro (MMK23.2 billion) for what it says is support for Myanmar’s democratic transition. According to a release by the EU, the funds will go towards two projects, “STEP2Democracy” and “MyGovernance”, both of which will “work with key democratic institutions in Myanmar to strengthen administrative capacities, policy development and legal reform”. Dr Johann Hesse, Charge d’Affairs of the EU Delegation in Yangon, said the fund showed the bloc’s support for Myanmar’s transition in the run up to the 2020 elections. According to the release, STEP2Democracy will support the Union Election Commission, political parties, local government bodies and civil society organisations in the run-up to the elections. The MyGovernance programme will work with various legislative and government institutions, the release said.
