Authorities involved in the tourism industry in Myanmar have said they are planning reforms that will help the country attract significant new visitors, after a slump amid the country’s handling of the crisis in Rakhine State. U Thet Lwin Toe, chairman of the Union of Myanmar Travel Association (UMTA), said the plans involved a meeting in Nay Pyi Taw of about 300 stakeholders in Myanmar’s tourism industry about how to establish some “quick wins” for sustainable development. “Obviously, our country is full of interesting places everywhere. Such an enormous potential needs to be urgently unlocked before it is too late,” he said, according to an article in a local newspaper. Thet Lwin Toe said that Myanmar needs to generate more income for the tourism industry, and must establish innovative ideas, as well as improve the quality of home-made products. According to the article, he said that government expenditure on tourism is only US$300,000, but is not enough. “We need to find ways to improve our funding. In this case, the government cannot do it alone. The private sector must support it,” he said.
