President U Win Myint has called on the parliament to give the go ahead for a multi-million-dollar loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) that would help improve the electricity supply in the country, according to an article in The Irrawaddy. The report said that the loan of US$ 298.9 million will be used to improve electricity in Yangon, Ayeyarwady, Tanintharyi and Bago regions, and in Mon, Kayin and Rakhine states. An additional US$ 10 million will be provided by the government for the project, which will help improve electricity in rural areas as well as expand the current system, the article said. The area that will see the most benefit from the project is Bago Region, with 151,000 households being connected, followed by Ayeyerwady with 84,850 and Mon with 42,757. Power consumption is expected to more than double nationwide in the next few years, and the Ministry for Electricity and Energy is planning to push ahead with numerous projects in order to meet the increased demand.
