The Kyunchaung power plant in Magway Region built by Hong-Kong based VPower will soon be ready to start operations. The electricity produced by Kyunchaung gas power plant will be supplied to the national grid.
VPower, in a consortium with Chinese state-owned enterprise China National Technical Import and Export Corporation (CNTIC), had won three liquified natural gas (LNG) to power projects with an aggregate contract capacity of 900MW in September last year;
Industry experts at that time criticized the tenders for being too demanding and with too harsh penalties for falling short of the agreements’ deadlines. Vpower indeed couldn’t comply with the deadlines but claimed that the COVID-19 crisis had disrupted its supply chain. Myanmar has struggled to generate as much power as it needs heading into this year’s hot season, when demand for electricity is the highest.
