State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has travelled to Japan, where she called on investors to seek opportunities in Myanmar and also expressed her gratitude for what she called the country’s understanding of its handling of the crisis in Rakhine State. “Please come and visit us and see for yourselves,” she was quoted as saying at the Myanmar Investment Conference, held in Tokyo, adding that Myanmar has an increased number of economic opportunities. Aung San Suu Kyi also said she was grateful to Japan for understanding during a time it is facing increased international criticism for its handling of the crisis in Rakhine State. She said Japan understood the complexities of the situation. Japanese companies have been heavily involved in Myanmar’s economy since reforms began in 2011, including in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, on the outskirts of Yangon, as well as several other infrastructure projects, including upgrading the country’s railways. During her speech, Aung San Suu Kyi said that Japanese citizens could now travel to Myanmar visa-free, a move Myanmar hopes will help boost investment opportunities in the country.
