Economic development not enough to solve Rakhine crisis – UNHCR chief

Development alone not enough to solve issues in Rakhine

Filippo Grandi, chief of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has said that development alone will not solve the issues in Rakhine State. In an an interview with the Myanmar Times, Grandi is quoted as saying that economic development is “good for Rakhine, but it has to be inclusive, otherwise it will be damaging”. Grandi conducted the interview during a five-day visit to the country. “If development includes and benefits all communities, I welcome it,” he was quoted as saying. He said that other issues affecting the state also included that of citizenship, which is linked to freedom of movement. This is a major issue for much of the state’s Muslim population, many who remain in camps for internally displaced people. Grandi said that freedom of movement in the state is “very limited”.
