More than 50 companies or consortiums, both domestic and international, have expressed interest in constructing a planned elevated ring road in Yangon, according to an announcement made on July 4 by the Ministry of Construction. In May last year, the ministry invited companies to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the 47.5 kilometre, four-lane road under a Public-Private Partnership. The new project, in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), is expected to connect downtown Yangon, Yangon Port, Yangon International Airport, Mingalardon Industrial Park and the Yangon-Mandalay highway. According to the announcement, the local companies who submitted an EOI included Capital Development, Max Myanmar and Shwe Taung. There were also 13 Chinese companies who have applied, seven from Japan, three from South Korea, as well as companies from India, Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, Vietnam and France, among others. According to a report in the Myanmar Times, the invitation for EOIs is the first step of the process. The ministry plans to issue the Request for Qualifications in August, and the Request for Proposals will likely be issued before the end of the year.
