The European Union has announced that it has placed sanctions on seven members of Myanmar’s security forces for their alleged involvement in the crackdown in Rakhine State last year. On June 25, it announced that it had imposed an asset freeze and travel ban on seven members of the armed forces (Tatmadaw) and Myanmar Police Force. The targeted individuals include Lieutenant General Aung Kyaw Zay, commander of the Bureau of Special Operations (BSO) No. 3 of the Tatmadaw. BSO oversees the Tatmadaw’s Western Command. The EU also targeted Major General Maung Maung Soe, who led the Western Command from October 2016 to November 2017 and is already sanctioned by the United States and Canada. Other targeted individuals include Brigadier General Than Oo, commander of the Tatmadaw’s 99th Light Infantry Division, as well as Brigadier General Thura San Lwin, who was commander of the Border Guard Police from October 2016 until October 2017. The EU has said that the European Council will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep its decision under constant review, including the possibility of further action.
