An international expert from the International Council on Monuments and Sites is expected to visit Myanmar next month to assess the country’s application for Bagan to be added to the World Heritage list, according to a report in Frontier. The article said that an expert from Australia will arrive on September 15 to prepare a report for UNESCO ahead of an expected decision next year. “The expert will investigate everything that UNESCO needs to know to make a decision about world heritage status and then write a recommendation for the World Heritage Committee,” Daw Ohnmar Myo, national project officer at UNESCO’s Myanmar office was quoted as saying. A 21-member committee is expected to make a decision on Bagan’s application at a conference in Azerbaijan from June 10 to July 10, 2019, the article said. In January, Myanmar submitted its final report on Bagan to UNESCO, in which it promised to implement a management plan for the Bagan heritage zone, which covers issues such as local businesses, social issues, agriculture, transportation and tourism, the report said.
