Manufacturing PMI remains low but recovering

IHS Markit Myanmar Manufacturing PMI increased to 43.2 in November 2020 from the second-lowest reading on record of 30.6 in October.

Despite this increase, the indicator remains below 50 indicating a contraction in the sector, the 3rd straight month.

IHS notes that “manufacturing operating conditions in Myanmar continued to deteriorate during November with output, new orders, employment and purchasing activity all recording sharp reductions. Factory closures, linked to restrictions imposed to control the surge in COVID-19 cases, were overwhelmingly linked to the latest decline in the index.”
It also noted that some survey indicators did show signs of recovery from October’s lows, with the latest overall deterioration in business conditions the softest in the current three-month period of contraction.
