Myanmar’s military has downplayed reports of a dispute with the civilian government, saying that relations between the two branches of the government remain strong. “If I [may] say, relations with the government are generally good,” said Senior General Min Aung Hlaing after reports emerged of a disagreement with State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. An international report published last week said that Min Aung Hlaing had threatened to carry out a coup, after an apparent disagreement about the government’s handling of the Rakhine crisis; the dispute was reportedly related to the establishment of a new committee that would have a foreign expert on it. “[The report] could damage trust in the media and it could be an attempt to worse relations among us [the military and the government],” he was reported as saying. Min Aung Hlaing also rejected the idea that a coup was planned, saying such a move would not be possible in a democracy. “We may have difficulties, but laws exist. We cannot do anything beyond the law. I want to say that [the coup] is impossible,” he said.
