Myanmar received over USD 6.7 million from China under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund during a signing ceremony of the agreement held in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday. The first agreement on projects of the LMC Special Fund for Myanmar (first batch), worth of USD 2.4 million, was signed in January 2018 to aid 10 projects. This time Myanmar will use the fund for 22 projects in the areas of agriculture, education, and ICT, among others.
A sub-regional cooperation mechanism connecting the six countries along the Mekong river (China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand), which is known as Lancang in China, the LMC was formed in March 2016 on a Chinese initiative. China is the largest trading partner for all the Mekong countries. China and Myanmar will act as co-chairs of the LMC in 2020.
