Mytel launches services

Mytel, the fourth telco company in Myanmar, has rolled out its operations inside the country, with the launch attended by senior members of the military, including Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. Vietnam’s Deputy Minister for Defence, Lieutenant General Tran Don, also attended the June 9 launch. Telecom International Myanmar Company Limited, which operates under the name MyTel, is 49 percent owned by Viettel, which is under Vietnam’s Ministry of Defence. Star High Public Company, under military-linked Myanmar Economic Corporation, holds 28 percent, while a consortium of 11 Myanmar companies, known as Myanmar National Telecom Holding Public, holds 23 percent. According to a local report, Mytel has 6,000 base transceiver stations that covers more than two-thirds of the country.
