Authorities in Myanmar have launched a new tourism campaign, “Myanmar, Be Enchanted” as part of a bid to attract visitors to the country, as the tourism industry continues to struggle from the fallout of the crisis in Rakhine State. The new slogan replaces the “Let the Journey Begin” campaign, which was launched in 2013, when the tourism industry began to see a boost amid economic and political reforms. “We believe that people around the world will know about Myanmar when we promote Myanmar tourism with ‘Myanmar, Be Enchanted’,” said U Yan Win, chairman of the Myanmar Tourism Federation (MTF), according to an article in Myanmar Times. Figures showed that 3.4 million tourists visited the country last year, down from 4.6 million in 2015. However, there is much criticism about whom the government statistics count as tourists. As a result of many tourists from Western countries staying away, Myanmar’s government is focusing on attracting more Asian visitors to the country. Statistics show that Asian tourist arrivals increased 12 percent last year compared to a year previously, according to the Myanmar Times article.
