A planned major city development in western Yangon expects to create an estimated two million jobs in 12 labour-intensive sectors, according to a report in the Myanmar Times. The article cited a new Socio-Economic Master Plan for the New Yangon City project, which said that the “main goal” of the project is to create two million “new and not substitute” jobs. “To do so, we will need to build 1,000 factories which will employ 2,000 workers each,” Serge Pun, CEO of New Yangon Development Company (NYDC) was quoted as saying. Daw Aye Aye Khine, head of planning for NYDC, said that the strategy for providing so many jobs would be to focus on attracting labour intensive businesses to establish operations in the new city, planned on thousands of acres of land on the western bank of the Yangon River. Sectors to be targeted, according to the report, include garment manufacturers, food processors and furniture makers, as well as chemical and pharmaceutical companies, automotive makers, and metal and mineral companies.
