Local company Parami Energy has reportedly reached a deal with the Myanmar government to develop a “mini-grid” system for about 1,500 households in villages in Yesagyo Township in Magway Region. An article in the Myanmar Times said the agreement has been signed with the Department of Rural Development, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, and the Village Electrification Committee (VEC), and will be the biggest mini-grid system in the country once completed. The project will cost US$1.6 million with 60 percent of the funding coming from the World Bank, the article said. Yesagyo is a remote town located about 200 kilometers north of Magway town, close to the confluence of the Chindwin and Irrawaddy rivers. Parami Energy believes that mini-grids could help to improve electricity access for some of the country’s most isolated communities.
