Plans devised for New Yangon City

Senior management behind a planned New Yangon City project held a “town hall style” debate on June 23 to discuss the ambitious plans, and aimed to confront some of the controversies around the project. The project is being developed by the New Yangon Development Company (NYDC), and is planned on 20,000 acres of land to the west of Yangon River as part of the first phase. According to reports, the project will include five village townships, two bridges, power plants, water and wastewater treatment plants, and a 10-square-kilometre industrial estate that will provide two million jobs. NYDC estimates the investment of the first phase will be more than US$1.5 billion. However, the project has also attracted some questions, including the role of China Communications Construction Co Ltd (CCCC), which has signed a framework agreement to work on the project, as well as the Yangon Region government’s involvement in the development.
