Authorities have announced they will ban liquor retailers from selling imported brands as part of attempts to tackle illicit alcohol in the country. According to a report in the Myanmar Times, members of several government departments held a meeting in late September where they told holders of FL-12 licences that they would no longer be allowed to sell imported liquor. The report said that authorities are taking action after the Department of Consumer Affairs had received two complaints regarding FL-12 holders selling counterfeit alcohol. “After the complaint about counterfeit alcohol that could endanger public health, we had to take action,” U Myint Cho, director of Consumer Affairs, was quoted as saying. Authorities said they will begin taking action against retailers found to be selling imported alcohol, including those with FL-12 licences. Those found guilty face three years in prison as well as the confiscation of their goods, the report said.
