Union Minister U Thant Sin Maung of the Ministry of Transport and Communications revealed that the ministry is planning to upgrade three domestic airports — Heho, Mawlamyine and Kawthaung.

Details are yet unknown but the domestic airports will be upgraded in cooperation with the private sector added the ministry, saying that MoUs will be signed with the respective companies.

The minister also hinted that the government is aiming to reach a deal with its Japanese counterpart within this year about the long-awaited Hantharwady International Airport, to be located about 48 miles (77 km) away from Yangon, in Bago Region, slated to replace Yangon International Airport which is limited in its capacity to expand.
