According to the numbers released by the Ministry of Commerce, the value of trade between Myanmar and its development partner Japan exceeded USD 1.15 billion in the first half of the current fiscal year that started in October 2019.
Exports represented USD 817 million, while import stood at USD 341 million. Trade with Japan usually hovers below USD 2 billion per year for the past 5 years, which means that bilateral trade this fiscal year could reach a new record.
Japan is one of the main partners for Myanmar. Japanese companies are market leaders in many sectors in the domestic market, are main investors in Myanmar’s SEZ, and the country itself provides loans and help through its cooperation agency JICA.
