U Set Aung appointed Kyaukphyu SEZ chief

U Set Aung, who is deputy minister for planning and finance, has been appointed chairman of the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) planned in Rakhine State. According to a report in The Irrawaddy, the appointment took effect in May, but was announced in state-run media on July 15. The announcement said that the committee’s previous chairman, minister U Soe Win, was now a joint chairman of the committee. Set Aung is also chair of the management of the committee of the Thilawa SEZ, which is located on the outskirts of Yangon. “His performance in Thilawa has been a success. As a result, he has to take responsibility for Kyaukphyu,” U Tun Tun Naing, a secretary in the ministry was quoted as saying. China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) won the bid to develop the SEZ in 2015 and was initially awarded an 85 percent stake, with Myanmar taking the rest. However, critics have called for the deal to be re-evaluated to give Myanmar a better share.
