British Foreign Secretary to meet State Counsellor during his visit

UK Foreign Secretary to visit Myanmar

The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary Mr Jeremy Hunt will visit Myanmar this week, as part of a two-day trip, where he is expected to meet with State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. According to a Reuters report, citing the Foreign Office, Hunt will visit the Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners to meet with human rights defenders, and visit northern Rakhine State, ahead of his meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday. Hunt is expected to raise the government’s handling of the crisis in Rakhine State, which has come under considerable criticism in recent months, including a blistering report released by the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Monday. Ahead of his trip, Hunt released a statement condemning last year’s military crackdown in Rakhine State. “We are determined to do all we can to provide security, dignity and justice to the victims,” he said. The UK’s former health secretary, Hunt replaced Boris Johnson as Britain’s Foreign Secretary in July.
