Buildings in five townships in downtown Yangon will be assessed for how earthquake resistant they are, according to a local report. The article, citing Daw Hnin Ei Win, section head of the Engineering (Building) Department of the Yangon City Development Committee, said that the buildings will be inspected in Kyauktada, Pabedan, Latha, Lanmadaw and Pazundaung townships. According to the report, the buildings will be evaluated in three grades: red, yellow and green. “Red” means a dangerous building that requires urgent repair, “Yellow” is a building considered slightly dangerous but that is still habitable, and “Green” is for buildings considered to be safe. “Having a green status doesn’t mean it won’t collapse in a quake,” said Hnin Ei Win. “It only means it is more resistant to quakes of ordinary intensity than other buildings.” The results of the survey will be made public after consultation with the Myanmar Earthquake Committee, the article said.
