China and Myanmar have agreed a 15-point agreement towards constructing a China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, according to a local report. The article, quoting U Min Zaw Oo, director of the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA), said that a final agreement is expected to be signed later this year. According to the report, the corridor will run from China’s Yunnan Province to Mandalay, then to Yangon, and westwards to Kyaukphyu, a multi-billion dollar, China-backed project in Rakhine State. It’s not clear if the corridor will pass through Myanmar’s restive north, where ethnic armed groups – some with close links to China – are in conflict with the Myanmar Army, known as the Tatmadaw. Min Zaw Oo said the agreement would involve collaboration on basic infrastructure, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, transport, finance, human resources development, telecommunications and research and technology, the report said. The project is reportedly part of China’s multi-billion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative, an ambitious project that aims to improve the country’s links by road and sea.
