The verdict in the trial of the detained Reuters journalists Ko Wa Lone and Ko Kyaw Soe Oo has been postponed for a week because of the judge’s “poor health”, according to reports. A decision on the months long trial was expected at Insein Court on August 27, but has been delayed until September 3, according to a report in Frontier. The article said that in a session lasting less than a minute, temporary judge U Khin Maung Maung told the court that U Ye Lwin has been sick since August 24. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were arrested in December last year, accused of handling official government documents. They are being charged under the Official Secrets Act and face a potential 14-year jail term if found guilty. At the time of their arrest they were investigating the killing of 10 Muslim men at a village in northern Rakhine State. In a statement delivered after the hearing, Reuters said it was “disappointed” not to have received the judge’s decision. “We look forward to receiving the verdict next week, when we very much hope that they will be acquitted and reunited with their families,” the statement said. Myanmar has faced international condemnation for the trial, which critics say was deliberate entrapment.
