Myanmar’s Central Statistical Organization (CSO) released the latest inflation figures for 2019 showing that the annual rate of inflation in Myanmar, based on the Consumer Price Index, stood at 8.81 percent in December.
The average inflation rate over 2019 stood at 8.02 percent.
The base year for calculating inflation is a Household Income and Expenditure Survey conducted in November 2012 by the CSO.
With the strengthening of the Kyat against the Dollar (now close to MMK 1,450 for USD 1), the high inflation rate will put pressure on the Central Bank of Myanmar to review its interest rates policy.
