The annual rate of inflation in Myanmar, based on the Consumer Price Index, peaked at 9.06 per cent in January according to a report released by the Central Statistical Organization, under the Ministry of Planning, Finance and Industry.
The figure has remained above 8 per cent for 8 consecutive months, since June 2019. The inflation rate began to climb gradually after January 2019 and reached a peak in September, before stabilizing in October-November, only to jump again to its highest level in December at 8.81 per cent.
Inflation is calculated based on the Consumer Price Index measuring the average change in the retail prices of goods and services purchased and consumed by households. The weights are based on a 2012 Household Income and Expenditure Survey conducted by the Central Statistical Organization.
