Myanmar avocados on UK shelves

UK consumers in London and Sheffield are now able to taste Myanmar’s avocados revealed The Embassy of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in London on November 14.

State-media reported that Myanmar Amara (a local variety), Hass and Buccaneer varieties were placed on the UK’s market shelves under the programme of the Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association (MFVP), and distributed by Freshpro Imports Limited to wholesalers.

The Mexico-originated fruit has seen an increase in demand both domestically and internationally and yielding good profits for growers. Consequently efforts are taken to push and sell the crop into foreign markets with a committee uniting all value-chain stakeholders in the talks.

According to MFVP, at present, Myanmar exports between 5,000 to 10,000 tons of avocados to China and Thailand through land borders. However, there is no guarantee, and the price is relatively low, between MMK 800 and MMK 1,000 per kg. The local demand is about 3,000 tons, with increased demand during the tourist high season.

About 800 national producers are organised in the Myanmar Avocado Producers and Exporters Association since 2018, growing the fruit primarily in Chin Hills, Shan highland, Naung Cho and Pyin Oo Lwin areas .
