Yangon International Airport halted flights on Friday after a landing mishap on the runway by a Golden Myanmar Airlines flight. According to a Myanmar Times report, the nose wheel of the aircraft snapped upon landing. However, there were no injuries among the 70 passengers on board, the report said. Runways were closed between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Although the mass delay lasted only a few hours, it was long enough to jam queues at Myanmar’s busiest airport. It also forced many passengers to reschedule their flights.
The incident is the latest in a series of air travel mishaps that have plagued Myanmar’s struggling aviation industry. In May, an aircraft operated by Biman Bangladesh Airlines skidded off a rain-soaked runway, injuring 19 of its 30 passengers. In the same month, a Myanmar National Airlines plane made a crash landing on Mandalay International Airport’s runway when its nose wheel failed. These incidents have come at a troubled time for Myanmar’s aviation industry. Domestic airline FMI Air ceased operations in June, 2018, the third Myanmar airline to shut down in recent years. According to a report by the Nikkei Asian Review: “The middle class cannot afford to be frequent fliers, leaving foreigners and Myanmar’s wealthy as the main clientele.”
