State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and Commander-in-chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, have met separately with a senior Chinese military official, as the two countries promised to maintain close ties. According to reports, Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe has travelled to Myanmar to discuss the relationship between the two countries, including the peace process and the economy. An article by Chinese state-run media said that China is swilling to “enhance mutual strategic trust” and wants the two countries to support one another. He also said he hoped Myanmar would support Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, an ambitious multi-billion dollar project that would see significant infrastructure developments globally, including in Myanmar. The report said that Aung San Suu Kyi appreciated the “outstanding achievements” China has seen under President Xi Jinping and that she expressed gratitude to China for its “firm support” to Myanmar’s economic development and peace process. According to analysts, China has significant control over some of the ethnic armed groups based in northern Myanmar, some who remain in conflict with the Myanmar armed forces.
