Members of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) are currently conducting a second round of assessments in northern Rakhine State, as part of an agreement signed with the government in June. According to an article in the Myanmar Times, the assessments were confirmed by a reporting officer for UNHCR. After a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Myanmar government and the two agencies in June, the first round of assessments took place at 26 locations in September, the report said. “As far as I know, the UN team started its work on Friday and may take more than a week to complete if they are uninterrupted,” U Chit Myo Oo, an official in Maungdaw was quoted as saying. Although Myanmar has said it is ready for the repatriation of refugees from Bangladesh to begin, many members of the international community say that conditions on the ground are not conducive to returns taking place.
