Government plans to introduce new automobile policy in October

Yangon’s new auto policy to come into effect in October

A new automotive policy for Yangon Region will be introduced in October, a senior government official has been quoted as saying in local media reports. A report in the Myanmar Times quoted regional chief minister U Phyo Min Thein as saying that the new Yangon Vehicle Quota Certificate (YQVC) will be introduced before the end of the year. The YQVC, which was initially due to be introduced in April, will allow buyers to bid for a license to import and own a vehicle in Yangon for a fixed period. The cost of a certificate is between K3 million and K9 million, the article said. Phyo Min Thein said it would allow the regional government to control the quota of cars imported into the commercial capital, which has seen an increasing number of traffic jams in recent years. Car dealers had grown frustrated by the delays, particularly since the government suspended a parking recommendation system in April 2016, aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the city.
