Myanmar’s neighbours in Southeast Asia have made rare criticism of its handling of the crisis in Rakhine State, and called for accountability for crimes committed there. According to an AFP article, Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said that members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) had met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss the crisis. “We expressed our grave concern with these alleged acts of violence that have led to loss of lives, injuries, destruction of homes and displacement of large numbers of people,” he was quoted as saying in parliament. “To be brutally honest, this is a man-made humanitarian disaster and some thing which should not be happening in this day and age.” Criticism of other members of ASEAN is typically rare, and the comments come as Myanmar faces international condemnation for the crackdown, which saw an estimated 700,000 people flee over the border into Bangladesh.
